Today's Reading: Job 1:1-22
For the next five weeks we'll be reading through the book of Job in conjunction with our sermon series. We'll start off with only a chapter a day this week, but then we'll be tackling some larger chunks of text starting next week in order to get through the entire book in five weeks.
One of the keys to understanding the book of Job is to look at the use of the words "God" and "LORD".
"God" translates the Hebrew word Elohim, which is a plural noun that I like to think of as the generic word for God. It is the same word that is translated "god" (lower case) throughout the Old Testament.
In most English Bibles "LORD" (all upper case) translates the Hebrew word YHWH - God's covenant name that was revealed to Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3.
In this first chapter, both words are used and they reveal a lot about Job's relationship with God. See what conclusions you can draw about that relationship.
