Today's Reading: Psalm 139:1-24
Read the passage and answer these two questions:
My thoughts on Psalm 136:
It's pretty easy to pick out an attribute of God in this Psalm, right? We've commented before on God's hesed - His enduring love. Hesed describes a sense of love and loyalty that inspires merciful and compassionate behavior toward another person. It is quite close to the idea of agape love we see in the New Testament, since both go beyond just feelings and they take action that is in the best interest of another.
But what is new here is the idea that God's steadfast love endures forever. That means that I can be confident that God's love for me is not dependent on what I do. I don't have to "earn" His love. That frees me up to obey and serve Him, not out of a sense of obligation, but out of gratefulness for the way He loves me.
Read the passage and answer these two questions:
- What doe this passage teach me about God and His attributes?
- How should that understanding about the nature of God impact the way that I live my life?
