Today's Reading: 1 Corinthian 15:1-58
In this chapter Paul gives us more details about the future bodily resurrection for those who have put their faith in Jesus. Jesus is the "firstfruits" in the sense that it is His resurrection that gives us confidence that we will also experience a physical, bodily resurrection one day.
When a disciple of Jesus dies, the spirit and soul of that person is immediately int he presence of Jesus. That is what most people would refer to as "going to heaven". But the body "goes to sleep" and begins to decay. But at the second coming of Jesus, those bodies will rise and be reunited with their sprits and souls and Jesus will transform those earthly bodies into glorious resurrection bodies that will live forever in the New Jerusalem we'll read about in a couple days.
We don't get a whole lot of detail here about those resurrection bodies, but what we know about Jesus' resurrected body helps fill in some of the gaps. Our bodies will be recognizable, but they will also be free of many of the limitations our physical bodies have here on earth right now. They won't get sick or wear out or be capable of sin. Take some time to meditate on that today and give thanks to God for the glorious future that awaits.
