Today's Reading: Zephaniah 1:1-18
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah (640–609 BC), who was the last godly king of Judah and who engaged in widespread religious reforms. The major theme of the book is "the day of the Lord" - a time of judgment against all who do not worship YHWH.
Although we won't be reading the entire book, it is encouraging to know that Zephaniah's message wasn't completely negative. When God's judgment comes, He is going to preserve a faithful remnant who will fulfill His purposes. This is a consistent theme of Scripture, going all the way back to Noah, when God preserved Noah and his family from the judgment of the flood.
That is essentially the theme at the heart of the gospel. In the midst of world that is deserving of judgment, God reached down into this world and preserved those who put their faith in Jesus. Take some time today to thank God for doing that work in your life.
