This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

July 12

Today's Reading: 2 Kings 17:1-41

Today  we begin a new section of our reading plan. Due to repeated cycles of sin, the covenant curse of exile is poured out. Assyria defeats the Northern Kingdom/Israel (722BC) while Babylonia defeats the Southern Kingdom/Judah (605–586BC).

In this chapter we read the sorrowful account of the fall of Israel - the northern 10 tribes. God did exactly what He had warned the people about on many occasions through the prophets. Because of their disobedience, Assyria conquered Israel, settled their land and exiled the Israelites into the surrounding nations.

We see here that the people didn't originally set out to reject God. But little by little they had incorporated the worship of other gods into their communities and eventually they ended up far from God. Unfortunately, the same thing can happen today. If we allow other "gods" into our lives they will eventually lead us far from the one true God. Is there anything in your life today - even something "good" that has become a higher priority than your relationship with Jesus?
