Today's Reading: 1 Kings 18:1-46
This is undoubtedly the most well known event in the life of Elijah. Elijah essentially challenges the prophets of Baal to a "duel" in order to prove that the Lord - YHWH - is the only true God. And when the Lord proves His superiority over Baal, the people acknowledge that He is God. But as we often see in the life of Israel that belief will prove to be short-lived, even for Elijah.
I am reminded here of the account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. The rich man begs Abraham to send someone to his household to warn them of the consequences of unbelief. But Abraham reminds him that they already have the testimony of Scripture and if they don't believe that, no supernatural event is going to guarantee genuine faith.
Is the testimony of God's Word enough for you?
