This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

June 28

Today's Reading: 1 Kings 12:1-28

This is such a heartbreaking account. As the son of Solomon, Rehoboam should have been the rightful heir to the throne when Solomon died. But because he refused to listen to the counsel of the elders in the community and chose instead to listen to the young men who agreed with him, 10 of the 12 tribes rebelled against him and the kingdom was split in two.

Jeroboam, who ends up as leading the northern ten tribes, is no better. He sets up two golden calves - one in Bethel and one in Dan - for the people to worship, so that they wouldn't return to Jerusalem and perhaps decide to follow Rehoboam.

For me, the important lesson to take away here is the value of listening to wise counsel, especially when that advice may not be what we want to hear. Wise leaders always surround themselves with others who aren't afraid to speak up and confront them when necessary.
