Today's Reading: Song of Solomon 1:1-17
Because of the sensuality present throughout the book, many have claimed that this is merely a metaphor or allegory that describes God's love for His people. However, in my opinion, the Faithlife Study Bible more accurately describes the nature and purpose of the book:
"Song of Songs, or Song of Solomon, is a group of poems celebrating romantic love between a man and woman. With extended metaphors—many of which seem odd today but were fitting in the ancient Near East—the book upholds the goodness of all God’s creation, including sexuality (compare Gen 1:31; 2:18). Marriage is celebrated as a full and rich expression of God’s love, meant to be pursued with longing and held onto tightly."
This is a must read for all married couples. If you'd like to understand this book better, I'd highly recommend Romantic Lovers: The Intimate Marriage by David and Carole Hocking.
