Today's Reading: Psalm 72:1-20
This psalm is understood by most scholars to be a coronation hymn for the King of Judah. It speaks of the prayers of all of the people for the king and the importance of understanding the king’s role in relationship to his God and the people.
Unfortunately, from late in the reign of King Solomon forward, Israel's kings did not reign in accordance with what is asked for in this prayer. That is certainly a fulfillment of the warning that God had given to His people when they first asked Samuel for a king to reign over them. We are reminded that if we place our faith in any earthly leaders, we will eventually be disappointed. Since our primary citizenship is in heaven, we need to make sure that our faith is in Jesus and not any human.
