Today's Reading: 1 Chronicles 17:1-27
There is an interesting word play in the first part of this chapter. David offers to build God a "house" - a physical place where God would manifest His presence to the people of Israel. But God reveals that David is no the one who will build that house. He also reveals that He is going to build a "house" for David. The underlying Hebrew word translated "house" in this chapter can either refer to a physical building where someone lives or it can refer to a "household", which is what God is promising to David.
This is what is known as the Davidic Covenant. God promises David that one of his descendants will establish a never ending kingdom. This promise is fulfilled by God when He sent His Son, Jesus, from the line of David, to the earth to provide salvation for His people. Right now, Jesus' kingdom is spiritual, but one day He will establish a physical kingdom which He will rule eternally.
