Today's Reading: 2 Samuel 11:1-27
This is certainly the low point of David's reign as king. He used his authority in order to commit adultery and murder in order to satisfy his own fleshly desires.
The one thing that has always stood out to me in this account is that this all happened because David was not where he was supposed to be. According to verse 1, he should have been on the battlefield with his troops, but instead he stayed home where he had enough idle time to get himself into trouble. I wonder how much of our sin happens because we're not doing what we should be doing. Maybe we say we don't have time to read the Bible but we have time to watch a TV show or movie that might cause us to think sinful thoughts. Maybe we take a long lunch with a co-worker of the opposite sex when we should be back at work.
The other thing that comes to mind when reading this chapter is that David could have "nipped this in the bud" early on. I am certainly reminded here of James 1:14-15 where James describes the process of sin: desire > sin > death. When David first saw Bathsheba, he could have short circuited the whole process right there by refusing to take the second look or entertaining lustful thoughts. But once he passed that point, everything got way out of control.
Today, ask God to show you where you are most vulnerable to sin in your life. Ask Him to reveal if you are putting yourself in places where you shouldn't be or if you're allowing an initial thought or sight to go beyond that point and develop into sin.
