This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

May 17

Today's Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-23

Once again the Holy Spirit is right at the center of this chapter. Because he has failed to obey God, the Holy Spirit "departed" from Saul. And once that happens Saul's life becomes miserable. But at nearly the same time the Spirit rushes on David (v. 13). But you'll notice a significant contrast to the way the Spirit came upon Saul. This time the Spirit rushed upon David "from that day forward".

I think we see a clue as to why that happened earlier in the chapter when God tells Samuel that He "looks on the heart", not on outward appearances. David is certainly not perfect, but, unlike Saul, he has a heart for the things of God.

When God looks at your heart, what do you think He sees? Is there anything you need to do to incline your heart toward God more fully?
