Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 1:1-46
Today we begin a new section in our reading plan. Joshua leads the nation into the land promised to Abraham, and the initial period of leadership by the judges is one of ups and downs.
Deuteronomy means "second law". It is essentially a farewell address by Moses to the Israelites before they enter into the Promised Land. Even though the people disobeyed God when He initially commanded them to enter the land, God is going to give them a second chance. Moses recounts much of their time in the wilderness and reminds the people of the sins of the past generation with the hope that the current generation won't make the same mistakes. He also appoints new leadership to lead the people after his death.
We would do well to learn from both our past sins as well of the sins of previous generations so that we don't fall into those same sins again.
