This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

April 18

Today's Reading: John 6:1-71

This is a long chapter, so I only have time here for a few observations.

John connects the events of this chapter with the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is just about to begin. Jesus performs a miracle and feeds the large crowd with bread. The next day, wanting to see what else Jesus can do for them, the crowds follow Jesus to the other side of the sea. But Jesus promises to give more than physical bread. He will give them eternal life. And the only work they have to do to receive that gift is to believe in Him.

He then proclaims that He is the true bread of life who has been sent down to earth from His Father. But just like the people of Israel began to complain and grumble about the manna, many are going to reject Jesus and not receive the eternal life He offers. Everyone who at the manna in the wilderness eventually died, but those who put their faith in Jesus will receive eternal life.

If you have put your faith in Jesus, you can't take any credit. Only those the Father draws can do that. On the other hand, if you reject Jesus, you can't blame God because that is a choice you made.
