This Sunday's message: The Song of Zechariah

March 30

Today's reading: Matthew 5:1-48

Most of you are probably familiar with this chapter, which is the beginning of Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount". While some, even some Christians, have used God's grace as an excuse to violate God's Law, we see here that Jesus certainly did not intend for that to happen. In fact, Jesus actually holds His followers to a higher standard: anger is just as bad as murder; lust is equally sinful as adultery, etc.

But at the same time, Jesus also fulfilled the Law as He obeyed it perfectly. And through HIs death and resurrection He made it possible for us to be clothed with His righteousness. While we are not saved by obeying God's Law, which is indeed good news since none of us could do that perfectly, we should have a desire to obey it the very best we can out of gratitude for the cost Jesus paid to make it possible for our sins to be forgiven.
