Today's Reading: Psalm 78:1-72
This Psalm is both heartbreaking and a great encouragement.
It is heartbreaking because we see how the people of Israel consistently rebelled against God even after they had personally witnessed His power at work in their midst. I am reminded here of the words from the prophet Jeremiah:
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
(Jeremiah 17:9 ESV)
So as easy as it is to find fault with the Israelites, we need to understand that our hearts are just as wicked as theirs and we are equally prone to rebel against God even after we see Him at work in our lives.
But we are also encouraged by this Psalm by God's mercy and grace. In spite of His anger toward sin, time after time He is true to His promises and He does not pour out HIs anger on His people even though that is what they deserve. The Psalm ends by pointing ahead to the Messiah who will come from the line of Judah and David, one who will provide a way to permanently deal with our wicked hearts.
