Today's Reading: Genesis 14:1-24
This morning I'm going to focus on the section that begins in verse 17. Here we are introduced to this mysterious figure named Melchizedek, who is both a king and a priest of the God Most high. He appears in the Bible only here and in two other places -in a Messianic Psalm in Psalm 110:4 and in the book of Hebrews. In Hebrews, we learn that Melchizedek is a "type" of Jesus, who is also a king and a priest.
Melchizedek blesses Abram and blesses God for giving Abram success in rescuing his nephew Lot. Although God has not yet instituted the "tithe", Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had.
Today, as New Testament disciples of Jesus, we are no longer subject to the tithe, but like Abraham, we are to give cheerfully and generously out of gratitude for what God has done for us.
